  • Letter To The Editor - Efforts to derail Trump

    C.J. Cornelius Jr. MD, Sidney|Mar 17, 2016

Dear Editor, There is currently an effort by the establishment of the Republican Party to sabotage the candidacy of Donald Trump. This is an effort that will destroy the Republican Party for decades if not for all time. They have even gone so far as to promote the candidacy of Hillary Clinton in order for them to retain their positions as the all wise and all knowing who should decide the candidate of the party and their personal perks which go along with same rather than let the voting public elect the Presidential candidate. If they are... Full story

  • Letter To The Editor - Reader: Liar, liar, pants on fire

    C.J. Cornelius Jr. MD, Sidney|Jan 14, 2016
    1

Dear Editor, The president waxed long and evasive Tuesday night in his annual address. The topics ranged from distortions to downright lies over more than an hour. Here is a man who has spent over $3 million to keep his records at colleges and others from being released and whose birthday record, which was released after much procrastination, was a phony, altered on a computer, which of course was not in existence at the time of his birth. He stated that the nation’s economy was in good shape and improving when he has presided over the g...

  • Letter To The Editor - Reader says opportunity is knocking

    C.J. Cornelius Jr., Sidney|Jan 4, 2016

Dear Editor: It appears that the city council will have an opportunity to rehire the best city manager that this city has ever known since he has applied for the position. In contrast to other of his predecessors his performance increased steadily year after year while he was in that position. He is not only respected throughout the state but revered by all that showed their trust in him. Let’s not miss this opportunity. – C.J. Cornelius Jr., MD Sidney... Full story

  • LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Reader doesn't like the current trend

    C.J. Cornelius Jr. MD, Sidney|Nov 17, 2015

Dear Editor: I have watched the city’s boom and bust cycles since the closing of the Army depot but am not liking the trend that currently exists. We have lost the best city manager we have ever had, the most qualified police chief in memory, the disapproval of the Keystone-XL pipeline and now the prospect of losing Cabela’s would seem to be more than we deserve. Let us pray that our largest employer will remain in the city. If not, our prospects for a replacement does not appear likely. I wish that I had reason to think otherwise, don’t you?... Full story

  • Letter to the Editor: 'Global warming' least of Obama's concerns

    C.J. Cornelius, Sidney|May 22, 2015

Dear Editor: With the current fiasco in Iraq and Syria, the President is telling the Coast Guard and the American public that the real problem we are facing is “global warming.” The mess in Iraq is his problem and he can no longer blame it on G.W. Bush. Tell this fable to those families who have lost loved-ones or who are living with service men who have been injured for life in the Iraq war which was won only to have been foolishly abandoned by our Commander in Chief over the objections of his military advisors, and even now is attempting to c... Full story

  • New book about Lincoln opens eyes about Obama

    C.J. Cornelius, Sidney|May 7, 2015

Dear Editor, “With Malice Toward None” is the title of Jack Levin’s new book. This quotation is from Abraham Lincoln’s second inaugural address when the termination of the Civil War was in sight. “With firmness in the Right as God gives us to see the Right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in: to bind up the nation” wounds: to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphans – to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace, among ourselves, and with all nations.” These are words of Abr... Full story

  • LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Remember, there isn't honor among thieves

    C.J. Cornelius, Sidney|Mar 13, 2015

Dear Editor, The reigning headliners in the current administration remind me of a variation of an adage: “There is no honor among liars.” With all of the scandalous activities provoked by the former head of the Department of State, the Attorney General’s racial bias and our current President, who spends huge sums of money to hide his past and seeks to make a stupid agreement with the Iranians who have never lived up to the provisions of a treaty in the past, we wonder if there are any in the inner circle who know how to tell the truth. Our ... Full story

  • Letter to the Editor: Term 'half breed' is part of the right to free speech

    C.J. Cornelius, Sidney|Feb 17, 2015

Dear Editor: Do Native Americans have a lock on the definition of “half breed?” A member of the Nebraska Board of Education used this term to describe our President and has received flak for doing so from many sides, including our Governor. The truth of the matter is the President is half white since his mother was Caucasian. The other half is mostly Arab and he is referred to an African mostly because of the color of his skin. It seems to me that it is the board member’s prerogative to refer to him as a half breed and it should not raise... Full story

  • Letter to the Editor: West Nile Virus

    C.J. Cornelius M.D. of Sidney|Sep 12, 2014

Dear Editor, West Nile Virus just robbed our community of one of its finest citizens. We all have heard the admonition “protect yourself from mosquitos particularly in the evening hours,” but since West Nile is fairly uncommon, we tend to discount that advice until something like this gets our attention. Few cases of West Nile have been reported in the Panhandle and the symptoms are similar to a cold or flu at the onset so we tend to get careless. The onset of a freeze in the weather will soon end the life of the lowly mosquito, but a wet spr... Full story

  • Letter to the Editor

    C.J. Cornelius M.D. of Sidney|Sep 9, 2014

Dear Editor, Kudos to our city manager and economic development chief for the past 15-plus years. He has recently been honored for his stewardship, foresight and downright hard work in leading Sidney to the forefront of small communities particularly in economic development. I have known Gary since he first hit town as a reporter of the Scottsbluff Star-Herald and have supported him and worked with him on a number of projects. He seeks not notoriety nor honors but just seems to get the job done. We are so fortunate that competing offers from... Full story

  • Letter to the Editor

    C.J. Cornelius|Jul 31, 2014

Dear Editor, This week marks the last that Dr. Cal Cutright will be treating patients at the Sidney Regional Medical Center. Forty-five years ago he was an outstanding athlete at Sidney High, then known as the “Maroons”. He furthered his education at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln where he was a ‘walk on’ player on the taxi squad of the UN football team. In his final year at Sidney High he joined the Sidney Men’s Chorus, later to be known as the Fort Sidney Colonels and participated in that group whenever he was in town until it disban... Full story

  • Letter to the Editor

    C.J. Cornelius|Jul 30, 2014

Dear Editor, Your article in the July 23rd issue regarding the death of a former Nazi armed guard at the Nazi Death Camp again brings to mind the recent death of Sidney’s survivor of Auschwitz. Benny Hochman spent three and a half years in this camp, with the slogan “ARBITEN MACHT FREI” over the entrance gate, was force marched in winter to Buchanwald where he nearly died only to be rescued by an army communications battalion, nursed back to health in an army hospital, worked as an interpreter in Europe and immigrated to the USA and spent many... Full story

  • Letter to the Editor: Independent voters

    C.J. Cornelius|Jul 28, 2014

Dear Editor, A recent poll showed a preponderance of Independent voters were unhappy with the Congress and the Senate and were considering voting for an Independent candidate. You should only do that if you are content with the continuation of the current Liberal agenda and its free spending anti-Constitutional activities. The only result of voting for an Inependant candidate would split the vote for a more conservative outcome since the Independent candidate cannot win, so your vote would be wasted with the possible result in the Liberal... Full story

  • Letter to the Editor: Something doesn't add up

    C.J. Cornelius|Jul 17, 2014

It has come to my attention that there is a provision in the Affordable Care Act that says that subsidies can only be extended to recipients who sign up through state exchanges. There are 36 states that did not set up an exchange and therefore recipients in those states are ineligible for assistance in meeting the cost of their health care premiums, which have gone up significantly in the past two years. Thus, the income from those states via subsidies is not forthcoming and the income from the remaining 14 states will not be enough to make up... Full story

  • Letter to the Editor: Art with meaning

    C.J. Cornelius|Jun 26, 2014

Your article in the Monday's edition regarding the Ponca Trail proposed by Congressman Fortenberry produced some interesting vibes for me and my family. One of the huge murals in the dome of the Nebraska Capital building painted by my nephew, Steven Roberts, depicts the trial of Chief Standing Bear in which the decision rendered by the presiding judge affirmed that members of the Indian nations were in fact citizens of the USA. Steve is a commercial artist who competed nationally for the contract to paint the murals in the Capital and is an... Full story

  • Letter to the Editor: Doing Sidney right

    C.J. Cornelius|May 12, 2014

Our community should be right proud of our city manager’s testimony before a US Senatorial audience recently. It sort of put our city in the national limelight for a short time and certainly a lot of the credit accrues to our own Gary Person. I have known Gary since he first appeared on the scene as a reporter for the Scottsbluff Star Herald and have worked with him on many of his projects over the years. He has exemplified the traits that have identified those of vision and common sense which are more often seen in the midwest. We are f... Full story
